Breast reconstruction is an operation to try to get back the shape of the breast after mastectomy (removal of a breast), or lumpectomy (removal of part of the breast).
The aim of breast reconstruction is to match the remaining natural breast as closely as possible.
This can either be done by creating a breast 'form' with an implant, which is put underneath the skin and muscle, or by using skin, fat (and sometimes muscle) from another part of your body.
Most of the time a combination of these techniques is used for a successful reconstruction.
OPERATION
The operation is performed under general anaesthesia, the average duration is 2 to 3 hours, depending on individual needs.
It is not a painful operation but swelling and bruising may be present for a couple of weeks.
Operation scars will start to disappear slowly in months. The final shape of the breast requires three to six months.
Breast reconstruction operation will increase a women’s self-confidence.
POST OPERATION
You will wear supportive bra up to 4-6 weeks. You won't be allowed to lift any heavy objects or do any exercise for around a month or more.
You will be followed by your patient co-ordinator when you back home to make sure you have no problem.
Our records show that it is highly unlikely that you will have a problem, but our surgeons and patient co-ordinators are committed to solve any problem or your concerns.
